Best Baby Sleeping Bags And How To Use Them

Baby Sleeping Bags

Our best sleeping bags with feet for babies and toddlers over 6 months old

We have all been there, as soon as the baby is asleep and cosy, we hope (and dream) that we are in for comfy sleep, all night long.

We have made the nursery the perfect temperature, and we have placed the blanket carefully – perfect for a comfortable night’s sleep.

But then sleep time comes and the little one starts to wriggle and move – time for a nighttime adventure!

When this happens and a baby starts moving, your perfect set up for bedding probably needs to be changed to make sure you both get a good night’s sleep. A blanket is ideal for easy tucking when baby is small but once they’re on the move it is time for a rethink. Enter the baby sleep bag!

An added bonus is that our peter rabbit one also makes our little boy look super cute, and the snuggly snoozes our baby has is a sure sign of the benefits of choosing the right sleep bag for your little one. See our post on other tips for new parents here.

When To Use a Baby Sleeping Bag

Before babies move around so much that their skin is exposed, they can usually be covered up with a blanket which can be adjusted with minimal disturbance to keep baby cosy and warm.

It is likely you will be there with them and see the sign that your child needs help. On warmer nights or cooler nights, you can regulate room temperatures as required, or manage it by staying with your newborn.

However, once your baby is moving around more in their sleep, blankets may no longer be the best thing to keep them warm. They kick them off, leading to (another possible) wake up when they’re cold or uncomfortable in bed. No need for a cot duvet (which are not as safe) instead consider a sleep bag.

Luckily, there is a perfect solution, especially for cooler nights – it’s time to invest in a sleep bag to keep them comfy and snug.

Night time changes in your baby’s behavior does not mean the end of a successful bedtime for little ones.

A carefully chosen sleeping bag will keep your little one at the right temperature, and unlike blankets allow them to move around while making sure you both still have a great night’s sleep.

The more common sleeping bags found on the market are a type of sleep bag or sack. Whilst they keep baby at the right temperature, they’re no good for a baby wriggling around in their sleep as they can get twisted and result in, yep you guessed it, more unnecessary night time wake ups.

So, we at Llama List think (and learned the hard way) that the best baby sleeping bags are those with feet. These keep baby warm and allow for comfortable movement.

Are Sleeping Bags Safe and Recommended For Babies?

Safety is always our number 1 so make sure you read the safety advice from the manufacturer thoroughly before using a sleep bag for your baby.

The more general guidance for the safe use of sleeping bags is also readily available. The NHS website is an excellent resource for all things related to baby safety at night, and it even states that “Lightweight, well-fitting baby sleeping bags are a good choice” for properly regulating baby temperature.

You can and should also speak to your Health Visitor or other advisory services.

Between following your instincts, heeding the manufacturer guidance and official advice, there is no reason that you cannot introduce a sleep bag into your baby routine safely.

Llama List highly recommends you seek professional advice on any such matters if you have concerns.

What Tog Sleeping Bag Should You Use For A Baby?

When it comes to baby and toddler sleeping bags it can get incredibly confusing with the different togs available. Almost every sleep bag is super soft and designed with a baby’s sensitive skin in mind.

Our advice is to save money by buying a 2.5 tog bag as they’re suitable all year, and the room temperatures can be adjusted (using popper fastenings) to suit summer or winter as needed. Lighter tog sleep bags, like blankets, purchased for summer will not give you year round use and will not keep the baby cosy on colder nights.

Many come with detachable sleeves for use during the colder months. Most baby and toddler sleep bag manufacturers will give you specific advice about nursery temperature and what to dress baby in so make sure you read this as each bag may be different.

As a general guide if baby is in a 2.5 tog sleep bag and the room temperature is between 19 degrees and 21 degrees they should be in one layer (so one bodysuit or one sleepsuit).  If baby is in a 2.5 tog sleepbag and the room temperature is between 15 degrees and 18 degrees then baby should be in two layers (bodysuit AND sleepsuit, for example).

These come in lots of different designs (anything dinosaur or animals gets our vote!) and the handy detachable sleeves (held in place with shoulder poppers) are useful for colder temperatures. Slumbersac sleeping bags are designed to keep baby at the optimum temperature when they sleep without overheating as they are lined and breathable. Their online shop has a large collection of different styles and colours to choose from (from grey to pink and everything in between!).

Pollutant free materials that can be washed at 60 degrees and tumble dried means they’re perfect for babies and toddlers. They’re also wonderfully soft and cosy on baby’s skin and well deserving of our top spot.
